BUDDHA NATURE AND MAHAMUDRA
The nature of the mind is pure. The mind is our awareness. It is functioning all the time, every second.
Right now you are using your mind to understand these words. Like a mirror. the mind reflects what is in front of it. Mirror and reflection are interdependent. Similarly, neither the words nor your awareness of them exists independently of the other, so the mind and what it experiences are interdependent.
What does it mean that the mind is pure? Interdependency means that the mind doesn't have a separate independent nature; it is empty of independent existence. This emptiness is its purity. Even when we are disturbed, stressed or feeling negative the mind is pure.
This retreat will lead us to experience this fundamental nature of the mind, its empty nature, also called Buddha nature. The path of practice to bring this experience to perfection is called Mahamudra (the Great Seal). Mahamudra is equally the purity of the mind that is functioning right now, and also the fully perfected mind of enlightenment. During this retreat we will learn about and meditate on Mahamudra.
Each evening we will practise Medicine Buddha, to help us remove obstacles to our practice, and benefit the world. This practice will help us develop devotion to the practice of Buddhadharma and the Guru, and discover how this enables us to purify and ripen our Buddha nature.
