ZOPA, , spiritual director of the FPMT
Lama Zopa Rinpoche was born in 1947 in a village
called Thami in the Solo Khumbu region in Nepal. When he was a
small child he was recognized as the reincarnation of the Lawudo
Lama, who had been a great teacher of tantra in the Nyingma tradition.
Later, he received tantric empowerments from Gaga
Lama, the main lama at Thami Monastery. When he was a child, he went
with his uncle to Domo Geshe Rinpoche’s Dung-Kar Monastery where
he began his monastic studies and became fully ordained. After the Chinese
occupation at the end of 1959 he escaped from Tibet to India where, together
with other monks, he eventually arrived at Buxaduar. There, he received
teachings from Geshe Rabten Rinpoche. Later he met Lama
Thubten Yeshe and became his disciple, following him until his passing away.
Nowadays, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, spiritual director of the foundation, travels
throughout the world visiting dharma centres and giving advice and inspiration.
